The Lewella Meditation Centre is a nonprofit organization, run by the E. Weerasekera trust, offering facilities and support for the study & practice of early Buddhism as documented in the Pāli canon.
The Centre is situated on the outskirts of Kandy town in Sri Lanka, at the back of the Udawatakele natural forst reserve and within walking distance of the Buddhist Publication Society. The Lewella Centre offers small meditation huts for self retreat, situated on a hill with a beautiful view over the Mahawelli river valley. The huts are bungalow type buildings provided with electricity, water and an attached toilet.
Residential stay is possible for male meditators of any Buddhist meditation tradition. The main building of the centre houses a well-stocked library, a meditation hall and a room for Yoga exercises. |

Visa
Holders of most western passports get one month on entry, which may be extended right away to three month altogether at the Immigration Department, 3rd Floor # 41 Ananda Rajakaruna Mw, Colombo 10 Sri Lanka. In order to save time it may however be a good idea to try to get a three months visa in one's home country before entering Sri Lanka. It is possible to stay for altogether six months at one stretch on a tourist visa.
Climate
The climate in the Kandian hills is temperate and pleasant most of the year.
At the Lewella Meditation Centre during the hot season (from April to June) it may become hot, though never as hot as in the plains and Colombo, (click here for more information) and electricity failure and water shortages have happened. The subsequent rainy season however cools down quickly with regular sunshine intervals. During the winter period (from November to February) days are bright and sunny.
What to Bring
Light cotton type clothing, mosquito repellent, an umbrella and a torch. Drinkable water is provided and there is no need for malaria prophylaxis. |
